After 40 Years In Education, Gary McAdam Retires

Gary McAdam has actually been on some type of school campus for about the past 57 years.

Thats counting him as a kindergartener to his most currentnewest duty as principal.

And, to think, education wasnt his very first career option.

McAdam initially made a degree in criminal justice from Cal State Sacramento. During the working with process, he took a chancegambled to substitute teach.

I extensively enjoyed it, and decided to change direction and pursue a profession in education.

Four decades later, it appears to be the ideal choice.

But, still, McAdam is ready for his next experience.

I think it is time to move on to the next stage of my life, McAdam said. Ive had a rich and enjoyable career.

Im lucky to have actually served in many school districts and dealt with a lot of terrific individuals.

As a 7-year-old, McAdam moved with his family to an ideal Antioch. He went to local schools, finishing from Antioch High in 1970.

Antioch High in fact supplied McAdam with his fondest school memories, and education mentors.

He stated he was able to talk about anything and everything with then-principal Don Richardson, physical ed instructor Brooks Golden and football coach Expense Snelson

They were fantastic duty models, he stated.

They paid attention to their students and offered thoughtful guidance. I tried to imitate those qualities in my own career.

One of his favorite memories on the historical school was when our football group beat Pittsburg High for the first time in 22 years. I was the offending center and middle guard.

McAdams initially teaching job was at the then-Antioch Junior High, which he attended as a teen.

He then taught at AHS and later became an administrator there.

For even more than a lots years, he called Pittsburg High house, in addition to a couple other schools.

In 2008, he relocated to Concord High, where he led the method up until June.

Additionally, McAdam taught at Los Medanos College from 1984 through this previous summer.

With 40 years and an array of campuses under his belt, its hard to identify a preferred or finest memory.

But, for McAdam, its always been about the students.

Any time I receive an e-mail or letter from a previous student – those are the best memories, he said. When they compose and thank me for the support and inform me that their lives are on the best track.

Now that hes retired, he stated hell most miss out on the the day-to-day interaction with students, personnel, instructors and community.

Without having to inspect into a campus come fall, he prepares to spend more time with his wife, Pamela, of 38 years and make more check outs to our little girl on the East Coast.

He will certainly also put in more time on tending to the couples 1920s house in downtown Antioch.
