Nitijela Elects New RMI Leadership

Majuro, Marshall Islands- At the Nitijela Chamber, the thirty-three members were sworn in by Supreme Court Chief Justice, Honorable Daniel N. Cadra, in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Following administration of the oath of office, members proceeded to elect Likiep Senator Donald F. Capelle as the new Speaker, Kili-Bikini-Ejit Senator Tomaki Juda as Vice Speaker, and were administered their respective oath of offices by Chief Justice Cadra.

Utrik Senator Hiroshi V. Yamamura nominated, Ailinglaplap Senator Christopher J. Loeak for the Office of President garnering a solid lead over Majuro Senator Jurelang Zedkaia.

President Elect Loeak began his political career following his election to the Nitijela from Ailinglaplap in 1985. He has served in different capacities including as Minister of Justice, Minister of Social Services, Minister of Education under late President Amata Kabua and former President Imata Kabua, and as Minister in Assistance to the President under former President Litokwa Tomeing.

President Elect will be sworn in with his Cabinet at a later date where he is expected to deliver the policy statement of the RMI government.
