The 32nd Annual Micronesian Endowment for Historic Preservation and Consultation Conference
July 25, 2011

President Zedkaia delivered the keynote address at the opening of the 32nd Annual Micronesian Endowment for Historic Preservation (MEHP) and Consultation Conference on Monday, 25 July 2011. President Zedkaia acknowledged the important role of the Micronesian Endowment for Historic Preservation which includes Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Republic of Palau, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa. President Zedkaia extended thanks and appreciation to the United States National Parks Service for its continued assistance and contributions to the MEHP.

As a traditional leader, Paramount Chief for Majuro Atoll, President Zedkaia is accustomed to the impacts that foreign influences have on the culture and tradition of a people. President Zedkaia, in his address to the MEHP, said, “The history of our countries and communities are enhanced by our uniqueness of our peoples, our languages, and our cultures. The continuing foreign influence and rapid pace of technological advances are now been embedded into our way of life, thus, threatening our rich Micronesian history, our unique cultures and societies.”

“In particular, the different languages here in Micronesia define our cultures, through the people who speak them and what they allow speakers to say. Words that describe a particular cultural practice or idea may not translate precisely into another language,” said President Zedkaia. “Please be reminded that with the extinction of a language, an entire culture is lost,” he further added. With that said, President Zedkaia officially announced the opening of the 32nd Micronesian Endowment for Historic Preservation and Consultation Conference.
