22nd Annual Meeting of the Association of Pacific Islands Public Auditors

Majuro, Marshall Islands – President Zedkaia officially opened the 22nd Annual Association of Pacific Islands Public Auditors (APIPA) Conference on Monday, 4 July 2011. The 22nd APIPA Conference is being sponsored by the United States Department of Interior, Office of Insular Affairs (OIA) and the Graduate School’s Pacific Island Training Initiatives. Participants including public auditors, Auditor-Generals, territorial auditors, and instructors from the Pacific Region of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Virgin Islands, Samoa and others are participating in this annual Conference.

President Zedkaia emphasized the importance of promoting efficiency and accountability in the use of public resources while acknowledging that corruption is a frequent problem. “We know that corruption is a frequent problem in many countries, and sometimes so deeply rooted that it defines the whole character of public life,” said President Zedkaia. President Zedkaia commended APIPA for its effort in promoting efficiency and accountability, promoting auditing/accounting profession, and promoting cooperation and coordination between audit institutions and financial managers of governments/agencies, basically living up to its purpose and objectives.

The APIPA program provides course work in areas of Developing and Presenting Audit Findings, Planning Audit Assignments, Governmental Accounting for the Non-Accountant, Grants Management, Audit Evidence and Documentation, the Essence of Internal Controls and so forth. The conference will end this Friday, 08 July 2011.
