Ambassadorial Consultation Program
October 19, 2010

RMI Ambassadors and Consul Generals designated to the United States of America, United Nations, ROC (Taiwan), Japan and Fiji are in Majuro for the Ambassadorial Consultation Program scheduled on the 18th to 22nd of October. They will meet with President and Cabinet Ministers, Speaker and Vice Speaker, with the Mayors, and other key people.

They’ve met with President Zedkaia and were able to provide updates, and discuss issues that needed immediate attention. Amongst these issues, the need to improve communications between the Embassies and the RMI, insufficient budget allocations to the Embassies and Consulates, the need to renovate the Embassies, Climate Change, to new a few.

The Nitijela has passed the FY 2011 budget and with it a 5.5% cut across the board for all Ministries and Agencies and would be difficult to accommodate these issues at present. However, Minister Jack Ading said that he will identify the funds that are available within the RMI Government and encouraged the Ambassadors and Consul Generals to do the same, adding that each Embassy and Consulate should provide a detailed budget report to identify crucial areas of spending. According to Secretary Kino Kabua, the Ministry is in consultation with the Embassies and Consulate offices to identify such areas.

The issue of Climate Change was discussed; at present the Cabinet is reviewing the Climate Change Policy and according to President Zedkaia the Cabinet will meet this week to discuss the Climate Change Policy. As such the Climate Change Policy is an important policy and a way forward in addressing Climate Change. Through this Climate Change Policy, the RMI will be able to get funding from donor countries to assist with this global phenomenon.

Present at the consultation with President Zedkaia were Minister Ruben Zackhras, Minister John Silk, Minister Jack Ading, Minister Amenta Matthew, Chief of Staff Christopher Debrum, Secretary Kino Kabua, Ambassador Banny Debrum, Ambassador Phillip Muller, Ambassador Phillip Kabua, Ambassador Jiba Kabua, Ambassador Amatlain Kabua, Consul General Noda Lojkar, Consul General Carmen Chonggum, RMI Representative to USAKA Jelton Anjain, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs staff.
