50th Celebratin and 19th Convention of the Federation of Asia-Pacific Women Association (FAWA)

Taipei, Taiwan. The RMI First Lady, Mrs. Hannah Jurelang Zedkaia, was among speakers at the opening ceremonies of 50th Celebration and 19th Convention of the Federation of Asia-Pacific Women Association (FAWA) held at the Grand Hotel in Taipei, Taiwan on Friday, Sept. 26, 2010. In addition to Pacific delegates from the RMI, the Solomon Islands, Nauru and Guam, delegates from Asian countries including Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Philippines, South Korea, and Vietnam comprised the 250 excited participants gathered to celebrate, share and learn from each other at this biennial gathering of Asia Pacific women.

The welcome message at the FAWA opening ceremony was provided by the ROC President Ma Ying-jeou who expounded on ROC’s efforts towards gender mainstreaming in his government and about women’s great contribution to Taiwan’s society. Among other distinguished speakers were Lady Grace Kabui of the Solomon Islands, Guam Congresswoman Madeline Bordallo, and conference keynote speaker, Dr. Leticia Ramos Shahani of the Philippine Islands whose addressed focused on the theme of the conference “Envisioning the future of Asia-Pacific Women.”

The two-day conference focused on four workshop topics including Building Women’s Leadership, Women and Environment, Impact of the World’s Financial Crises on Women and Women’s Health.

According to First Lady Hannah Jurelang Zedkaia, “Marshallese women’s groups would benefit from joining the FAWA. We need to share and learn from our Asian sisters. Partnerships with Asian women will strengthen our efforts on the ground to improve the status of women economically, socially and politically.”

The newly elected president of FAWA is Ms. Kristal Koga of Guam. The next FAWA Convention will be in Guam in 2012.

While in Taipei, First Lady Hannah Jurelang Zedkaia and her delegation, Dr. Hilda Heine and Presidential Aide, Mrs. Morean Watak, also visited a home orphanage program operated by a local charitable organization.
