July 26, 2010

Majuro - The National Youth Week has been a front to address various issues relevant to youths today. Since 1998, the National Youth Week, one of many activities by the Youth Bureau under the auspices of the Ministry of Internal Affairs has been actively engaging youths through conferences every summer to rejuvenate and instill a sense of direction in the mindsets of the young men and women of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. One may argue the progress of our youth, however it is only befitting that this years National Youth Week’s motto is, “If not us, who? If not now, when?”

Several hundred youths from all over the Republic of the Marshall Islands are in Majuro to take part in the week long National Youth conference. This year’s National Youth Week conference is focused on Teen Pregnancy, and its impact on education, the extended and immediate family, and on the traditions and customs of the Marshallese people; Teen Pregnancy Preventions will also be discussed.

At the opening ceremony, President Jurelang Zedkaia in agreement with Leiroj Neimat Reimers said, "Everything is worthless if there is no consideration of the custom. We have to learn it and live it. The Manit is our strength and it binds us together and is the key to success." The youths today have adapted to the modern lifestyle and with it bring many challenges.

“The challenge is in your moment. You must begin! You are the source of success and hope of this country,” said President Zedkaia.
