The Nature Conservancy Protecting nature. Preserving life.
June 10, 2010

Majuro, Thursday 10 June 2010 - Mr. Russell Leiman the Managing Director of Asia-Pacific Region of the Nature Conservancy, along with Speaker Noah Ideaong met with President Jurelang Zedkaia and with several Ministers during a courtesy and a briefing to seek the government’s support. Also presented during the courtesy and the briefing were Marion Henry, Secretary of R&D-FSM; Trina Leberer, TNC Micronesia Program; Willy Kostka, Micronesian Conservation Trust; Ricky Carl, TNC Pohnpei Field Office; and RMI’s MC focal points.

TNC is a global leader in nature conservancy dedicated to protecting nature and preserving life. The Nature Conservancy (TNC) was established in the United States and has expanded worldwide since its establishment in the early 1950s. TNC is involved in numerous conservation efforts in the Pacific Islands on matters such as climate change and its impact on life, and in conservation of marine and forest resources in Micronesia.

TNC is partnered and have been working intensively with the Micronesia Challenge Regional Office in Palau, the Micronesia Conservation Trust in Pohnpei, MC focal points in Guam, CNMI and with our local MC focal points, Office of Environmental Policy Planning Coordination (OEPPC), Marshall Islands Marine Resources Authority (MIMRA), and with non-governmental organizations such as Marshall Islands Conservation Society (MICS).

According to Mr. Russell Leiman, several countries around the world has created a similar initiative which in his belief, an initiative that is changing the world. The Micronesia Challenge has inspired other countries. In May 2008, the governments of the Bahamas, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, St. Vincent and Grenadines committed to the Caribbean Challenge, and in May 2009, leaders of the six Coral Triangle countries-Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands officially launched the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security.

However, the Micronesia Challenge faces challenges in the long-term. The Challenge will have to raise approximately $75 million to support it’s ongoing efforts in all five jurisdictions; Republic of Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Guam and Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands. President Zedkaia gave his full support and will look into avenues to raise funds for the Challenge.

Mr. Leiman along with the other representatives will visit the other jurisdictions under the Micronesia Challenge to seek their support.
