May 19, 2010

Washington, D.C. - Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Insular Affairs, Anthony Babauta today presented the President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), Iroij Jurelang Zedkaia, a draft copy of the Interior Department’s Office of Insular Affairs’ 5-Year Review of the Compact of Free Association with the RMI.

The draft report, prepared by the Office of Insular Affairs (OIA) considers the progress made by the RMI in meeting development objectives, rate of infrastructure investment, economic growth and provides recommendations for increasing the effectiveness of U.S. assistance.

“Undoubtedly, the Compact of Free Association speaks to our strong historic ties and the very unique and distinct relationship shared by the United States and the RMI. This draft report reflects our continued partnership and collaboration with the RMI as they move forward in advancing their economic development initiatives,” said Assistant Secretary Babauta.

“The 5 year review is a very important component of the Compact, as amended. We look forward to thoroughly reviewing the draft report and to consultations with our U.S. partners in making our comments to the report that is sent on to the U.S. Congress. We note that under the law, the review may make recommendations concerning adjustments to the inflation rate, and changes to the decrement structure in annual Compact financial assistance,” said President Zedkaia.
