May 14, 2010

Washington D.C.

President Zedkaia met with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. This is President Zedkaia’s first visit to Washington D.C. as President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. President Zedkaia was accompanied by Foreign Minister John Silk, Ambassador Banny deBrum, Chief of Staff Christopher deBrum, and Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ms. Kino Kabua.

It was a brief yet successful meeting as President discusses global warming and education with Secretary of State. “While we have many issues that we will be discussing with U.S. officials in the upcoming week, I would like to briefly discuss the crucial issue of global warming, and the impact that it has on my country,” said President Zedkaia.

President Zedkaia further discusses the Copenhagen Accord, “while the process at which the Accord was achieved was imperfect, it nonetheless represents agreement by a large number of countries and RMI believes it must have a strong, material influence in negotiations.” As a traditional leader Zedkaia is concerned about the future of the Marshallese people and their lands as it is amongst other countries that are most vulnerable to global warming. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that the United States needs the Republic of the Marshall Islands and other Pacific Island countries strong support in the upcoming meeting in Mexico. "It is a matter of survival," said Secretary of State.

In light of our mutual goal to improve education, President asks that the Peace Corps program be reinstated in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. “Previously, the Peace Corps did much to help our country by providing good and dedicated teachers for our schools,” said President Zedkaia.

Amongst other issues, the MUORA and Land Use Agreement as well as the Five Year Compact Review were discussed briefly. Secretary of State is well aware about these issues. These issues will be discussed with relevant U.S. Government officials in the upcoming week.

President Zedkaia reminded Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the last Secretary of State to visit the Republic of the Marshall Islands was in 1988, at that time it was Secretary of State George Schultz. President Zedkaia invited Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to the Republic of the Marshall Islands. “I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to visit the Marshall Islands. As the closest of allies and friends with the United Sates, we would welcome a visit,” said President Zedkaia.
