(Majuro, Republic of the Marshall Islands)Twenty-four young men and women from outer islands including youth from Majuro and Ebeye are participating in the 5th Marshall Islands Youth Congress 2010 host by Youth Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs. At the International Conference Center (ICC), traditional and church leaders, local and central government high officials, private sector, MIHS choir and distinguish guests together with the participants congregated for the opening ceremony on March 30, 2010.
The program include speaker from Majuro Atoll Local Government, Mayor’s office and from Council of Iroj. Chairman Kotak Loeak in his remarks, explained the meaning of the conference motto ‘Ne ejab kij, enaj won? Ne ejab kio naat?’ translated as ‘If not us, who? If not now, when?’. “The time is now in your prime age, for you are strong physically and great in numbers. Take control of your destiny, learn to be involved and be involved” said, Iroj Kotak.
President Jurelang Zedkaia was the keynote speaker addressing important issues such as climate change, and world economic down fall that affected our small island nation. President Zedkaia offered words of encouragements and challenging the youth leaders to commit to meeting schedules and lessons. “This is your time, be active and take leadership for you are the future of our young nation. The community you represent, families and your government needs you” the President said.
The opening ceremony concluded with a special song composed especially for the conference by the Youth Council. The conference will be held for four days starting March 30th to April 2nd.
