Universal Periodic Review
January 26, 2010

Majuro, MH-

With financial assistance and support of the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner from Human Rights, the Pacific Regional Rights Resource Team and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, a Government and Non Governmental Organization Forum/Training on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is scheduled to be held in Majuro on 1-5 February 2010 at the International Conference Center.

The UPR is an opportunity for countries to focus on challenges each faces, and in the case of the Pacific Islands, the threat of climate change and sea level rise, achievements made, as well as areas of support still needed in the area of human rights.

This week-long event will bring together policy makers, advisers, experts and representatives of the most vulnerable group (women, children and the elderly) to discuss the principles, objectives and modalities of the UPR and best practices for States and other stakeholders in preparing information for the UPR, including:

~ The importance of broad consultation with all relevant stakeholders in the preparation of the national report; and

~ The need for the Government, with assistance of the international community, to implement the recommendation coming out of the UPR process.

The Review for the Republic of the Marshall Islands before the Human Rights Council in Geneva is scheduled for November 2010.
