President Zedkaia meets with Marshallese community in Honolulu
November 16, 2009

President Jurelang Zedkaia departed for Honolulu on Friday, November 13, 2009. He met with the Marshallese community the next day to discuss and listen to their concerns on issues regarding the Medical Care provided to Marshallese citizens in Hawaii. Other issues and concerns brought up during the meeting were the Status of the Nuclear Claims Tribunal and the 177 program, Federal Pell Grant Eligibility, Immigration issues, the Kwajalein Land Use Agreement, and Bill S1756.

He repeatedly stressed that the only way for the community to overcome problems in Hawaii is for them to work together. Further stating and reiterating his message during his inaugural speech that he himself cannot solve the problems and issues that the Republic of the Marshall Islands is facing today or in the future, and that it would take the thirty-three members of the Nitijela to work and solve these problems and issues. President Zedkaia assured the community that the government will continue to address these issues and he will bring these issues to the attention of the Cabinet once he returns home.

President Zedkaia thanked the Marshallese Community for their time and the opportunity to share their concerns. He elaborated that this will not be the last time he will meet with the community; every chance he can get, he will get together with the community.

The President was accompanied by Foreign Minister John Silk, Chief of Staff Christopher deBrum, and staff of the Consulate Office.
