President to attend high level meetings on Climate Change in Denmark

President Jurelang Zedkaia and delegation departed Wednesday, December 09, 2009 to attend the High-level segments on Climate Change in Copenhagen, Denmark. President is accompanied by First Lady Hannah Jurelang Zedkaia, and Chief of Staff Christopher deBrum. A team of negotiators from the Republic of the Marshall Islands departed last week to Copenhagen, Denmark to attend the negotiations leading up to COP15 which will be held from the 16th to the 18th of this month. The Minister in Assistance departed Monday, December 07, 2009 and will attend the Ministerial-level segments as well as the negotiations, and will join President Zedkaia in Copenhagen. Foreign Minister John Silk will also be joining the President and delegation.

The hope is that from the COP15 conference in Copenhagen, a consensus in combating climate change could be reached in line with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Kyoto Protocol. Republic of the Marshall Islands and other Small Island States position on greenhouse gas emission is to reduce greenhouse gas emission by more than 85% or to 1.5 degree Celsius to 1990 levels by 2050.

The German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Guido Westerwelle has invited President Zedkaia and other leaders of the Small Island States from the Pacific Islands to a two day roundtable discussion, 14-15 December in Berlin, Germany. The main focus of the roundtable discussions are Positions on Climate Policy, and an introduction to Germany’s activities in the field of Climate Protection.
