Majuro,MH October 6, 2009-
H.E. President Litokwa Tomeing and H.E. Ambassador Bruce J.D. Linghu of the Republic of China (Taiwan) presided over the “papaya handover”, and were joined by Hon. Minister Ruben Zackhras, Hon. Minister John Silk, Hon. Minister Mattlan Zackhras and Chief Secretary Casten Nemra in personally planting more than a dozen of papaya trees themselves in front of the Capital Building in the morning of October 6, 2009. Planting these papaya trees is showcasing and promoting the agricultural cooperation projects between the ROC (Taiwan) and the RMI.
Under the Horticulture Development Project 2008 and 2009, the ROC (Taiwan) Technical Mission has thus far promoted papaya planting and has already presented in the amount of more than 4,000 papaya trees and seedlings in the Marshall Islands. The extension project of papaya planting has not only improved the agricultural production, but also contributed to the conservation efforts to save the endangered Mulé (Micronesian Imperial Pigeon) in the RMI.
