Republic of the Marshall Islands hosted the 11th Micronesian Chief Executive Summit and the 9th Micronesian Presidents' Summit

The government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands hosted the 11th Micronesian Chief Executive Summit (MCES) and the 9th Micronesian Presidents’ Summit (MPS) in Majuro which was held back to back from the 13 through the 17 of July 2009. The members of the Summits are Head of States and Chief Executives from the Republic of Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, the U.S. Territory of Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

Current and outstanding issues of concern were discussed in both summits; issues of mutual concerns and cooperation, with the agenda items ranging from Invasive Species to Climate Change issues, and other issues relevant to the social, economic, and political development of these island nations.

The 11th MCES officially opened on the 14th of July and ended with the signing of the Communique. The 9th MPS commence right after the 11th MCES on the 17th of July with the signing of the 9th MPS Communique, and the Majuro Declaration on Climate change.

In his opening remarks, President Litokwa Tomeing aptly coined the coming together of the three Heads of State from RMI, FSM, and Palau, along with the Governors of Guam, CNMI, and FSM as “Micronesian Solidarity.” He further called for the establishment of a National Strategic Plan under the auspices of the MCES and MPS, along with invitation to include other countries in the Micronesian sub-region that have not yet joined the MPS.
