Majuro, February 4, 2009 – The Marshall Islands joined for the first time today international observance of World Cancer Day.
Health Minister Amenta Matthew declared World Cancer Day to the Nitijela, listing activities that will take place throughout the week to honor this event including distribution and wearing of a symbolic lavender ribbon. Minister Matthew urged Nitijela and the Marshallese people to take immediate measures to curb the path of destruction Cancer is rapidly making within our communities.
“Cancer is one of the leading killers in our society today. More and More people are suffering, one way or the other, because of Cancer. We must take this opportunity to advance efforts to minimize, if not eradicate, cancer within our society. We must act now if we are to protect ourselves and our families from cancer,” the Minister said.
“My condolences to the many families who have suffered and are still suffering from cancer.”
Nitijela Speaker Iroij Jurelang Zedkeia, on behalf of the Nitijela, joined the Minister to offer condolences to Marshallese who have fallen victim to cancer.
