Majuro, Marshall Islands (November 26, 2008) –
President Tomeing officially opened the joint offices of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and invited UNIFEM and other agencies to join the offices as well.
“This is a major accomplishment and I believe that the joint presence of these UN offices will certainly help towards the betterment of life for the Marshallese people,” said President Tomeing.
The official launch was held on November 26, 2008 at the G&L compound where the Joint Presence Initiative offices are located. The UN Joint Presence Initiative will work with the Republic of the Marshall Islands to achieve its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
“Without a doubt, the opening of this office will help us towards the fulfillment of our Millennium Development Goals (MDGs),” President Tomeing said.
However, President Tomeing said that to achieve these Millennium Development Goals and to make life better for the citizens of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Marshallese people will have to do their part.
“Are we ready to do our part to help ourselves?” the President asked, further stating, “The Bible promises us that God helps those who help themselves.”
According to Mr. Najib Assifi, Director Pacific SRO and UNFPA Representative UNFPA Pacific Sub-Regional Office, this launch is the forth of seven offices that these three agencies will be launching in the Pacific in 2008. Jane Ishiguro, Country Development Manager, will be overseeing the UN Joint Presence Office here in Majuro.
The members representing the Joint Presence; Mr. Najib M. Assifi, Director Pacific Sub-Regional Office and UNFPA Representative, United Nations Population Fund; Dr. Isiye Ndombi, UNICEF Representative, United Nations Children’s Fund; and Mr. Toily Kurbanov, Deputy Resident Representative, United Nations Development Programme.
