Government officials met on August 21st with members of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and USAID for a briefing on the Transition of US disaster assistance management for the RMI from FEMA to USAID.

FEMA officials explained that while USAID will do the hands-on assistance, FEMA will still be a major player in the RMI Disaster Assistance Management Scheme. USAID officials said the new program is much better in the sense that USAID will actually have a presence in the country. “USAID will have a person on island working closely with the RMI Disaster Office. In addition a warehouse will be built and supplied with emergency supplies and equipment for a quicker response should there be an emergency.”
USAID and FEMA also met with and briefed the RMI Disaster Committee on the same date.
This assistance is made available to the RMI under US Public Law 110-229 signed by the US President on May 8, which included among various US Bills, the Compact Amendment Act 2003, which in turn includes the RMI disaster assistance agreements.
