Digicel Pacific Limited, a mobile telecommunications network based in the Caribbean’s, extended an invitation to the Office of the President, and the Ministry of Transportation and Communication to visit Samoa Digicel, one of their sites in the Pacific region. The site visit / fact finding mission, was a follow up to several meetings and presentations made by Digicel to the RMI Government that started in early 2007.
In response, Honorable Dennis Momotaro, Minister of Transportation led a RMI delegation to Apia, Samoa. The RMI delegation included Minister in Assistance to the President, Honorable Christopher J. Loeak, Mrs. Anono Loeak, Mrs. Daisy Alik-Momotaro, Assistant Secretary of T&C Mr. Wallace E. Peter, and Mr. Nixon Elisa, representing the Government owned radio V7AB.
The site visit / fact finding mission to Apia Samoa include the site visit to the Digicel Samoa main operation center and the equipment control facility. The delegation also made a courtesy call and meet with the Prime Minister of Samoa and other Government representative.
The presentation made by Digicel Samoa showed that one of the goals of Digicel is to develop state of the art telecommunications network, provide world class service in emerging telecommunication markets and to provide coverage, care, and choice and value for money. Furthermore, the presentation showed that Digicel has positively impacted the lives of the people of Samoa. The calling rates are very low compare to Samoa Tel. The telecommunication services provide by Digicel covers up to 95% of Samoa, including the rural areas which had no previous telecommunication services. The Government owned telecommunication network Samoa Tel also increase its subscriber and profits since the launching of Digicel Samoa.
The meeting with Samoa Prime Minister, His Excellency Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Mailelegaoi, showed government support for the services provided by Digicel. The Prime Minister stated that since the launch of Digicel in Samoa, there has been great improvement in communication services throughout Samoa. He also noted that Digicel has contributed to Samoa’s economic development. He said in an interview with the local newspaper, the Samoa Observer during the launching of Samoa Digicel in November 2006 that “Samoa now the envy of Pacific neighbors” due to its economic growth. The development of the private sector and open competitions among service providers are key elements to economic growth in Samoa and the Pacific.
The whole trip was sponsored and funded by the Digicel Pacific Limited, which includes the airfare, accommodation and other incidentals required during the trip.
