Close Up 2008
March 28, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC – On March 26, 2008, a group of high school students from the Marshall Islands visited the RMI Embassy to the United States as part of this year’s annual week-long “Close-up Program”. Twenty students, accompanied by two teachers from the Marshall Islands High School and the Kwajalein Atoll High School, had been in Washington the past week, and have been taking part in various educational activities.

The visit to the Embassy was one of several activities that the students engaged in. By visiting the Embassy, the students witnessed the intricacies of how the RMI engage the United States on bi-lateral issues. The students were briefed on various issues, such as the U.S.’s nuclear legacy in the RMI and potential scholarship opportunities from various federal and privately funded organizations.

The students took interested in the day-to-day operations of the Embassy, and the dynamics that the Embassy has to consider when working with different branches of the U.S. Government. A Q&A session was reserved towards the end of the Embassy’s presentation. Mr. Charles Paul, First Secretary and Charge d’Affairs a.i., fielded most of the questions.

The “Close-up” students depart for Philadelphia on Thursday, March 27th, before making their way to New York City, the last stop on their week-long trip. They return to the Marshall Islands on Sunday, March 30th.
