Robotics, 3D printers, computer game programming. No, this is not Carnegie Mellon University; its the middle school in the Elizabeth Forward School District.

“Children can make and dream anything that they want,” states Assistant Superintendent Todd Keruskin.

The dream factory at Elizabeth Forward Middle School is the result of updating and collaborating the art, computer and woodshop class.

Caitlin Kolesar, a 7th grader, created and fabricated an iPad holder to fit on the wheelchair of her fellow student.

“Theres this app called ‘1, 2, 3 Design,’ which is this, that’s what I made it off of,” said Kolesar. “All you have to do is make use of math. This does the math for you, all you need to do is have the design, hook it as much as the computer and it logs right in.”

In computer system class, sixth graders program computer game, seventh graders design robotics and 8th graders create video commercials.

“I kinda like how you get to make stuff you wanted to make because you were a little childrena youngster,” said Josh Balogh, a 8th grader.

Right here, conventional art, mathematics and English combine with media art, graphics and computer system science.

Sarah Tambucci, director of the Arts Education Collaborative in Pittsburgh, says most western Pennsylvania parents demand arts in school.

“Extremely ethnic still in its origins and a great deal of immigrants who pertained to western Pennsylvanian had a lot of their arts and traditions and custom-mades that they brought with them,” said Tambucci. “I think that belongs to reason why numerous of the art types that we still have here in Pittsburgh are so entrenched in what we do.”

She states, unlike many other neighborhoods, schools, foundations and professional artists collaborate.

“If were doing something in music, we’re working with the Pittsburgh Symphony, if we’re doing something with the visual arts, we’re working with the Warhol or the Carnegie Museum of Art or the Bed mattress Factory,” Tambucci states.

Educators are finding that math and English only teach so much. The arts assist instruct trouble addressing, creative thinking and dealing with others.

“We require to get children to be able to construct and develop, fabrication and design are truly crucial in believing process,” said Elizabeth Forward Superintendent Dr. Bart Rocco. “A lot of schools do not instruct that. Were teaching design; were instructing creativity. We’re teaching those facets that we understand are going to help children in future.”

Elizabeth Forward achieved this, regardless of being a district with a lower tax base. They did it with the collaboration of regional foundations and universities and businesses.

Its been so effective; its now spread to other school districts, consisting of Pittsburgh Public Schools, McKeesport, Seneca Valley and West Allegheny.
